A group of British-born Moroccan girls were studying Arabic in the Saturday supplementary class held at Al-Hasaniya Moroccan Women’s Centre when the Chair of Al-Hasaniya, Fatima Mourad, made them all a promise. She said that if they all worked hard at their studies, Al-Hasaniya would take them on a cultural trip to Morocco, to see parts of the country which they had never seen before.
At the time most of the girls had only ever been to Laraache in Morocco, a small town in the north of the country where most of their parents have their roots. Fatima wanted to give the girls an opportunity to see a different side of Morocco and experience something more of the country’s rich culture, so as to enhance and enrich their understanding of their Moroccan heritage.
Thanks to the hard work of Souad Talsi and the generosity of The Hassan II Foundation, Royal Air Maroc and The Council for Moroccans Abroad, in April 2009 the girls landed in Casablanca’s Mohamed VI airport. Among many places which the girls visited were the Moroccan Parliament and British Embassy in Rabat, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, the Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane and the old medina of Fez.
