Within the wardrobe

Al Mario Al Maghribiy – The Moroccan Wardrobe

‘Within the Wardrobe’ was a community project run by Kensington Palace, which explored the relationship between culture, dress and identity. Six community groups from the borough of Kensington and Chelsea worked with professional artists to produce a collection of works exploring the theme.

British-born Moroccan girls from the Saturday supplementary Arabic class at Al-Hasaniya Moroccan Women’s Centre worked with artist Sofie Mayton and photographer Pennie Quinton, to explore how the clothes they wear relate to their sense of individual identity and cultural heritage. Each girl made her own miniature wardrobe sculpture to express her sense of herself as conveyed through her appearance and clothing.

The project culminated in an exhibition at Kensington Palace which ran from April 2007 until March 2008.
