Good Practices for Access and Well Being

NB this programme has ended

The Good Practices for Access and Well Being programme (GPAW) was an eighteen month programme funded by NHS Westminster and co-ordinated by the Migrant and Refugee Communities Forum (MRCF).

The programme sought to develop and pilot approaches to improving access to primary care services for BME communities. GPAW worked with Al-Hasaniya Moroccan Women’s Centre and four other BME community organisations from the boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster:

  • Chinese National Healthy Living Centre
    www.cnhlc.org.uk
Promoting healthy living and access to health services for the Chinese community
  • Midaye Somali Development Network
    midaye.org.uk
Serving the needs of the Somali community and ethnic minorities
  • Queens Park Bangladeshi Association
    www.qpba.org
Dedicated to the empowerment of Bangladeshi people in the Queens Park ward and the wider Bangladeshi communities in Westminster
  • WSPM Agape
Service for disadvantaged groups, including West African communities, residing in Westminster and Greater London

The community organisations researched and collated data taken from the experiences of members of their community, in order to articulate a series of recommendations for the providers of primary care services. It is hoped that these recommendations will now be developed into a practical set of measures and processes for improving access to NHS services for people from BME communities in the two boroughs.

As part of the programme the community organisations produced a guide to effective use of interpreters and a series of fact cards on NHS services, all of which were edited by Al-Hasaniya and translated into the community languages.
